Do you feel anxious about visiting the dentist? It’s quite common. Many adults throughout the country are scared when it comes to getting dental care, which means many people never call our office until they’re already in pain.
Why Are People Afraid of the Dentist?
There are many different causes of dental anxiety. Some people have had bad experiences in the past with other dentists. Others don’t like the physical closeness required for a dentist to work on their teeth. Unfortunately, the longer you wait in between dentist visits, the bigger the chance that painful or serious problems may arise.
Strategies for a Calm Dentist Visit
Here are some tips for combatting your anxiety and getting your teeth the care they deserve:
- Listen to music. Plug in your headphones, close your eyes and concentrate on your favorite songs instead of the sounds of the dentist’s office.
- Bring a friend. A calming presence in the waiting room will help you stay relaxed before any procedure.
- Wear your own sunglasses. Typically, dentists supply protective eyewear, but you may prefer the fit of your own sunglasses.
- Establish a signal for when you need a break. Let us know if you’re feeling uncomfortable by raising your hand, and we can slow down and let you calm down.
Considering Sedation Dentistry?
For some, these calming strategies might not be sufficient. Apple Springs Family Dentistry offers nitrous oxide/laughing gas and conscious oral sedation. We find that both offer our patients a safe and effective way to feel at ease during their appointment.
