What To Do in a Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies don’t fix themselves—and waiting can cost you the tooth.
Follow these steps immediately, then call our office and head in right away.
Knocked-Out Tooth
What to do immediately:
- Pick it up by the crown (top), NOT the root
- Gently rinse with water—do NOT scrub
- Place the tooth back in the socket, if possible.
- If that is not possible, keep the tooth soaked in milk or saliva.
What to do next: Call immediately and get to our dental office within 30–60 minutes.
This is your best—and possibly only—chance to save the tooth.
Severe Toothache
What to do right now:
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Gently floss to remove anything stuck
- Take over-the-counter pain relief
- Apply a cold compress if swelling is present
What to do next: Call now and come in today. Tooth pain almost always gets worse without treatment.
Abscess (Tooth, Gum or Root Infection)
What to do immediately:
- Rinse with warm salt water several times
- Take pain relief if needed
- Apply a cold compress
What to do next: Call us immediately and come in as soon as possible (same-day).
This is a serious infection that can spread.
Chipped Tooth
What to do right now:
- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Save any pieces if possible
- Apply gauze if bleeding
- Use a cold compress
What to do next: Call now and get seen today at our very next available appointment.
Small chips can quickly turn into bigger problems.
Cracked Tooth
What to do immediately:
- Rinse with warm water
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Apply a cold compress
What to do next: Call now and come in today.
There is no advantage in waiting if you have a cracked tooth. Tooth cracks can worsen quickly and can lead to permanent tooth loss.
Broken Tooth
What to do right now:
- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Save any tooth fragments you can
- Apply gauze to stop bleeding
- Use a cold compress to reduce swelling
What to do next: Call us immediately and come in today.
An exposed broken tooth is at high risk for infection.
Loose Tooth (Adult Tooth)
What to do immediately:
- Do NOT touch or wiggle it
- Gently reposition if needed
- Bite down lightly on gauze
What to do next: Call now and see us immediately.
Delays can result in the loss of your tooth.
Broken Dental Crown
What to do right now:
- Find and save the crown
- Try placing it back with dental cement or toothpaste
- Avoid chewing on that side
What to do next: Call now and schedule a same-day or next-day visit.
The exposed tooth can quickly become damaged.
