What Is a Root Canal?
Root canals have received a bad reputation over the years, but they are actually a routine procedure that is as comfortable as getting a tooth filling. The truth is that they relieve you of your pain and restore your tooth’s function. They can also save your tooth so you don’t have to get it extracted.
During a root canal procedure, Dr. Tay will first apply a local anesthetic to numb the area. We have additional calming sedation options available if you would like. He will then clean out any decayed pulp inside the tooth. Once the infection has been removed, Dr. Tay will fill and seal the tooth so that it’s protected and strengthened.
How Do I Know I Need a Root Canal?
Root canals are necessary when the soft tissue, or pulp, inside your tooth has become diseased due to severe decay or infection. Sometimes you will hear people refer to a root canal as endodontics because that is the dental field concerned with treating this inner part of the tooth. Endodontists are the people who specialize in this care.
Damage to your tooth’s pulp can occur due to a variety of reasons including poor oral health care, a tooth injury, large fillings, or a chipped or broken tooth.
Here are some symptoms that signal a root canal might be needed:
- Toothache (can range from discomfort to throbbing pain)
- Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold
- Tender or swollen gums around possibly infected tooth
- Tooth discoloration
- Pimple-like bump on gum near possibly infected tooth
- Difficulty opening mouth
Root Canal vs. Extraction
Whenever possible, we will always suggest getting a root canal over an extraction because it allows you to keep your natural tooth. It also means you won’t have to spend additional time, money, and stress getting a tooth replacement to have a full smile again.
That being said, there are some situations where we can’t save your tooth and will suggest removing it. This could be because it is too damaged and weak to repair or because you have a crack that extends below the gum line. We are happy to bring you in for a consultation to give you our professional recommendation about which treatment is right for you.
