If your teeth aren’t in their best condition, you may be wondering which restorative dental treatment will work best not only for your budget, but for your lifestyle. You have most likely heard of dental crowns, which are a type of dental restoration that covers the entire tooth. There are also veneers, which cover only the front part of the tooth and are mainly used to fix cosmetic issues.
Veneers
Veneers are very thin shells that are attached to the front of your teeth. They are made out of thin porcelain and are bonded to the front of your tooth to create a Hollywood smile. Veneers are a good option for fixing discoloration or other cosmetic imperfections like minor chips and cracks or misshaped teeth.
If your natural teeth don’t have a lot of remaining enamel, or have some type of damage, then a crown may be a better restorative option rather than veneers, but if you have aesthetic issues that don’t affect your tooth’s functionality then they could be right for you.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are typically made out of porcelain and are shaped to match your tooth. They are placed over your decayed or damaged tooth as a “cap” to increase your tooth’s strength and durability. When we place a crown, we remove any decay or infection from your natural tooth first, then will carefully shape your tooth so the crown fits over it perfectly, allowing it to seamlessly blend in with your teeth.
While crowns can fix imperfections in your teeth, including discoloration, cracking, or chipping, they are most useful in fixing decayed or damaged teeth. If you have a tooth that has extensive infection or decay, then a crown can restore your damaged tooth to its former functionality.
